Wedding items for sale

I have a few items that I have no use for and would like to sell rather than just throw away, email me at daccado@aol.com if you are interested. Everything is in great condition and I have more pictures of everything if you need it. Everything is priced at least 50% less than I paid for it.

Vases/Candle Holders
The majority of my vases still have the pillar candles in them, and the candles all have plenty of burn time left. I will sell them this way first and if someone wants the vase only I'm sure I can freeze the candle out. (they would look melted shortly after being lit anyway so no one will know they were not new!)

Card Box: SOLD

I bought this card box from a fellow knottie so I should keep it moving on! I never changed anything and it would be easy to change the color of the ribbon. The lid is getting a little bit worn, but it should hold up or would be really easy to fix if you felt it needed it.

Finally - I have a TON of wedding magazines that I would love to give away, they are dated over the past 2 years or so but I have Brides, Modern Bride, Wedding Channel, The Knot, Martha Stewart Weddings, Modern Bride and a variety of local publications. cost = FREE

Bella Bridal Gallery – B+
My Dress
I love my dress and I love the location of Bella and most of the time I loved going to Bella, my dress wasn’t available anywhere else in the state (as a sample). There were a few occasions that I felt uncomfortable though because I didn’t order my bridesmaids dresses there or get my alterations done there, but that is understandable that they would want both of those pieces of business I guess and I got great service most of the time I was there. I also was disappointed that they didn’t carry Maggie Sotero, it made comparing my two final choices difficult, but I know different salons have different designers.

Netbride – A
Bridesmaids Dresses
Netbride was quick to give me quotes, the ordering process was easy and the dresses came in 2 months ahead of schedule and all in great condition. The sizing was off, but I think that is the designers fault.

Gourmet Invitations – A
Invitations
Tifany was great to work with and I got so many compliments on my invitations. Everyone said they were the nicest invitations they had ever received (seriously that is what I was told over and over, I’m not AWing). One problem was that I had ordered my pocketfolds in landscape layout, but she made them in portrait layout. They still looked great, but not what I wanted because no where in her contracts is the orientation called out.

North Congregational Church – A/Mark Jensen – A
Ceremony/Rehearsal
This church has a strong connection to my family and is where we attend regularly. The church is beautiful and it was a great setting. I wish that Mark would have been a little more flexible with the rehearsal, but it all turned out just fine. I was able to talk them into letting us throw rice, so that was a bonus!

Detroit Yacht Club – A
Reception/Day after brunch
Ever since my parents became members of the DYC, I have dreamed of having my reception here. It was pretty much everything I had dreamed of. One minor problem was the power outage that they had, although that only affected a few of the outlets on our side of the building and they were quick to light all places that needed it with candles. Julia was quick to respond to my (many) emails and great to work with.

Cakes by Suzanne – B
Cake
I loved Sue’s cakes growing up so I figured cakes were not that big of a deal, I never got to eat my cake so I’m not sure how it tasted, but I do wish it would have looked a little more professionally done. She took the picture I gave her too literally, but in the end it was fine.

The Little Flower Shop – A
Flowers
I never cared much about flowers other than wanting daisies and Christie at TLFS was good about pulling ideas and direction from me by looking through a lot of pictures. They did a mock-up of my bouquet that was very helpful and I was so happy with all of the day of arrangements. One thing that I didn’t like – it was not made clear to me what needed to be returned to them so I left a few vases at the reception thinking they belonged to the DYC.

The Shooting Gallery/Dionne Haglund – A+
Photography
There is not much I can say about Dionne that hasn’t already been said on the Detroit board other than she really is as great as everyone says. From the first time we met at a bridal show and she gave me and my mom a hug through giving me advice on the wedding day she was always fantastic and her work speaks for itself.

Shamrock Video Productions/Mike McGrath – TBD
Videography
We were so happy to meet Mike! We had been searching for someone with his style of shooting who wasn’t going to cost me more than $2000. We have not seen a final product yet though, so I will wait to give him a grade but he was good on the day of.

Rent-a-DJ/Kevin – B-
Reception Music
We liked Kevin & Kelly when we met with them and we got discounts by using both them and Dionne so we just booked them. I was so afraid of having a cheesy DJ but I thought Kevin seemed like he would be OK. He was OK – I wished I would have gone to see him in action ahead of time because there were a few things he did that I could have lived without, but overall he was respectful of my (demanding) ideas and he kept the party going all night. 2 things that I didn’t like – 1) we booked with Kevin and Kelly for our day. . . at our final meeting we were told that Kelly took another job and that we would have some assistant who I had never heard of before. Kelly had kind of sold herself on being an asset to me during the reception because she used to be a coordinator and I was disappointed that she would just back out. Turns out I was really disappointed because Kevin had originally suggested taking their extra lights to the DYC and when Kelly took the additional job those were tied up and they would have really come in handy with the power outage. And 2) in our contract I thought we were supposed to have 6 hours of music. Our cocktail hour started at 6:30 so when Kevin played the ‘last dance’ song at midnight I was a little taken aback – I didn’t do anything about it, but we were supposed to end the reception at 12:30

Luxury Limo Car & Coach – A
Transportation
This was all Jeremy’s department to work with them, but they were on time, the limo was stocked with what we had requested and he got us downtown in a shorter time that we had allotted for so it was great! The stereo didn’t really work and I forgot to burn a CD to play, but not sure that is the companies fault.

Sposa Seating – A+
Chair Covers/Table Linens
Maya was great to work with, she was very helpful and I totally had to splurge on my linens after seeing all that she had to offer. We were lucky enough to be the first to use this particular set of satin chair covers and the champagne sashes matched the colors in my dress perfectly! The whole room just glowed - I was so happy with everything

Larson’s Jewelry and Design – A+
Engagement Ring/Wedding Bands
Brian Larson is great to work with, he took all the time that we needed to go over diamond information when we first started looking at rings and he was great to lend advice when picking out bands. We will continue to use Larson’s for all future jewelry needs.

Men’s Warehouse – A
Tuxedos
We did everything with the Novi location and they were very helpful. They made sure that we were taking advantage of all the discounts available and that the rented tuxedos would match the owned tuxedos.

Gina Agosta Salon & Spa – A+
Hair/makeup/pre wedding pampering
I love this salon and have been going here for 12 years, but before my wedding prep I had really only ever seen John Agosta. While preparing I was able to get highlights & color, facial, mani/pedi, and of course my day of hair & make-up. Everything was great – John Paul did a fantastic job on my hair (and my sanity), my make up was great through the end of the night and my highlights and nails were perfect too!

Cudge.net – A-
Votive candles & holders
I ordered over 200 votive holders and candles and they all arrived in a timely manner, of all those, 3 were broken. I wrote to the company and they said they would ship replacements, I never got them though. Candles lasted through the entire night.

Steak & Ale – A-
Rehearsal Dinner
When we finally decided on a place we were happy with the private rooms that Steak & Ale offered. The meal selections were also great – we were able to offer our guests pretty much whatever we wanted for around $22 per person. I did not like the way the room was set up for the dinner and the waitress left one of our pre selected menu choices off her list when she was reciting them and then acted like I was wrong when I corrected her, but the food was great.

Hana Ayer – A+
Veil/Alterations
Hana saved my wedding day!! After losing 40 lbs my dress needed some major alterations and Hana really stepped up to the challenge, she did a lot of work on my dress and by the end it fit perfectly! Plus she was reasonably priced. She also made my veil and it was perfect.
to
The Omni Riverfront - B
Hotel Block
Starr at the Omni was really great to work with, I felt like we got a great deal on rooms and the shuttle was invaluable to our guests (and us!). We did have a slight issue with the reservations process – we had several guests call and were told that the block expired or never existed when neither was true and were not able to get the reduced rate room until I contacted Starr and had it adjusted. I only know of the guests that mentioned it to me, I have no idea if even more were turned away or decided not to stay because of this problem. We did have a few guests upgraded to some huge penthouse suites (not sure why one of those upgrades wasn't us! lol)

Magnet Street Weddings – A
Save the Date Magnets
They were flexible with their designs so I could get the layout I wanted and they came in 1 ½ weeks earlier than scheduled

Vista Print - A
RD invitations
Vistaprint was easy and fast and best of all cheap!

Sandal’s Grande St. Lucian Review
June 12 – 19, 2007

We left Detroit bright and early on TUESDAY June 12th and traveled 2 hours to Atlanta and another 4 ½ to St. Lucia. We arrived in the main airport on the island – Henwanorra - on the south side in Vieux Fort. Once off the plane and reunited with our luggage we walked out to find the Sandals shuttle and several men who acted as if they worked for sandals to take our luggage – but they did not and they were expecting a tip for taking our bags about 50 feet – avoid these people!

The Sandals “shuttle” was a taxi that had been contracted out. There was at least one actual sandals branded bus, but most of the groups were getting into these taxis. We started the trip up to our resort and about 1 hour into it, we stopped at a little roadside bar for our first Piton beer. This stop was initiated by the taxi driver, (who just happened to have grown up in the town we stopped in, Dennery) but it was nice to get out and stretch.

2 hours later, we got to the resort and our bags were taken (this time by actual Sandals employees) and we were whisked up to the Concierge suite where we were given drinks and hot towels to relax. We listened to a short description of the resort and filled out the paperwork then were shown to our suite. Luckily, our travel agent (David Smith) had put in a request for us so that we would get a room in the building we preferred and we had a great location – we were the suite right next door to the William Jefferson Clinton suite (we were room 1407 in the Cap Estate building). Our room was actually a lot nicer than I had expected, we had a really nice flat screen TV, a safe, a mini bar that was re stocked everyday, towel service twice a day, hair dryer, coffee pot, a great balcony with a table and chairs and a suit drying rack, full length mirror, and plenty of water and pop stocked daily. It was very clean and the bed was comfortable. There was even one outlet that was converted to US standards so we didn’t need the adapter we had purchased.

The bathroom was really nice

And the view from our balcony was fantastic

We unpacked and then headed downstairs for some dinner. It was about 6:00 at this point and we had been traveling for 12 hours straight and couldn’t wait to relax. We went to the Bayside restaurant, but they were not open yet so we walked down to the beach and had a drink at the Beach Bar. Back at Bayside, it was an ala carte night (opposed to their buffet nights). I had tomato pasta and Jeremy had fish – both meals were very good. I should point out that I am a very picky eater – I don’t eat any seafood and I have this fear of meat in foreign countries so I don’t eat that either – I know, I’m weird. When we had finished dinner it was already getting dark. Since the island is so far east, the sun sets around 6:30 every night! We decided to hit the hot tub for awhile and met some other couples who were married on the same day as us (most of the HMs there were), they had arrived a day earlier and were complaining about sunburn already!

The next morning, WEDNESDAY, we slept in late! Well, not late, but until 9 which seemed late since it gets light there very early (but it is easy to block light from your room if you want to). Then we went down to Josephine’s Creperie for a late breakfast. I had Banana and Jeremy had Pineapple, both were very good. I love crepes so this restaurant was one of the selling points on the Grande for us. There were hardly any other people in Josephine’s every time we were there though; it is billed as more of a dessert destination. It is also a bakery and they have cookies and cakes and they also have cappuccino, espresso and latte drinks. I had a latte to go and we went to explore a little more of the resort on our own. We also stopped in the Concierge suite to book some excursions. After discussion we decided on the day trip to Martinique and the Soufriere Adventure Cruise (I had heard from a lot of people that the latter is a “must do”)

We changed into our swimsuits and went down to the Barefoot By The Sea restaurant for lunch. This is a great lunch spot, they have a lot of sandwiches and quick meals. There is also an appetizer bar with nachos and popcorn, Jeremy would frequently grab a bag of popcorn to take to the pool with us – it was pretty good. The restaurant is nice, but for some reason it smelled of fish – really strongly, it was not a pleasant experience. I’m not sure if the smell was coming from the kitchen or the ocean, but I never noticed it anywhere else on the property. I wasn’t hungry but we had a few nachos and Jeremy got a BLT and fries – it was good.

We spent the afternoon out on the beach, it wasn’t hard to find a few chairs to lay on, but the covered loungers were all reserved by towels and bags all day long. At first Jeremy went to the Beach Bar to get us some drinks, but after awhile we noticed that there was also a waitress walking the beach and she would bring us whatever we wanted. There were also some random vendors roaming the beach offering jewelry and their services as a tour guide outside of the resort. One even offered us pot, but if you nicely say no they are not that bad and they will go away. We spent some time in the Cascade pool too – it was never crowded at all and it was nice to have the volleyball and basketball nets, they were fun.

After a long day in the sun we went back to the room to clean up and I really wanted to try the Italian restaurant – Toscanini’s. In all the materials we had, it said that the dress code was closed toe shoes for men, but Jeremy didn’t bring any closed toe shoes. It is kind of funny because you see these guys in the restaurants wearing shorts and gym shoes and they look anything but classy and Jeremy put on nice linen pants and a button up shirt but because he was also wearing suede flip-flops we were concerned he wouldn’t get in! Kind of dumb, but we decided just to go for it. The maitre d did glance down at his feet, but he never said anything so we felt better – however I highly recommend your FI/DH bring a pair of closed toe shoes so you don’t have to worry about it – bring collared button up shirts as well, I think that was also in the dress code. Speaking of dress – I was surprised to see that the other women there were really dressed up! I mean, not like black-tie dressed up of course, but I saw some super cute dresses and shoes. I figured it would be more of a beach dressy scene so I felt a little under dressed most of the time – bring your cute dresses and shoes for sure! (Also, we noticed this more at the Grande than at the other 2 resorts, the Regency was not as dressy as the Grande and almost everyone we saw at the Halcyon was from the Grande, so not sure about that. BTW – Grande is pronounced “Grand” not ‘gran-de’ as it looks.)

So, once in Toscanini’s we had a great experience, their servers are really nice and they have a wine menu that is additional cost. We are by no means wine snobs, so we stuck with the house wine which is included (and good wine anyway!) but we saw a few tables that had ordered something special. We had Bruschetta for an appetizer, minestrone soup and Caesar salad, Cheese Ravioli and Spaghetti with Bacon - it was all very good, I loved the ravioli. Jeremy wished his had a little more sauce, but I’m sure if he would have asked they would have brought it out for him. We finished the meal with Tiramisu and that was also very good, Jeremy had flan and he wasn’t very impressed, but it was flan.

After dinner we had a few more glasses of wine at the Beach Bar and walked out to the end of the pier. On our way back to our room we stopped at one of the double lounger beds that are spread around the property in little cabana tents. We just laid there and talked for awhile. These beds are in place of the infamous Sandals hammocks, which I was really looking forward to! But I quickly got over it. We went back up to our room to find a surprise that had been delivered from our travel agent! I won’t give it away for his other customers though :)

THURSDAY was the day we had signed up for the day trip to Martinique. We had to meet down in the lobby pretty early and we took a shuttle (taxi) to the marina in nearby Rodney Bay. We got on one of those big power catamarans and we decided we wanted to get some sun so we sat up on the top deck.

We lathered up the 30 SPF as usual and we were off. It was a beautiful day, but it was pretty windy and the ocean was a little rough. Unfortunately, we didn’t think about wind direction and all that and the spray from the waves was coming up and getting us and everyone else on our side of the deck drenched. After awhile I couldn’t handle it anymore, but the seats on the inside were already taken so we decided to stand near the captain. There was a bar to hold on to there and we really needed it, it was a very rough ride. I’ve been a boater my whole life and I’d like to think I’ve got a decent pair of sea legs, but it was hard even for me to walk across the deck without holding on to something. They also provided breakfast on the boat, but it was very strange sandwiches and fruit – we didn’t eat much.

The trip was about 90 minutes long and we arrived to Martinique and stopped in a port where the captain needed to clear the boat through customs, while he was doing that we had 20 minutes to check out the duty free shops. They were nothing too impressive – I got a Martinique magnet and some postcards. Some people were stocking up on liquor and perfume, but we knew that we could get all that in the airport. After we were all back on board they took us to the town of Fort-du-France where we were let off the boat to roam around or follow the tour that the staff were providing. We started on the tour but quickly got bored and went off on our own.

Martinique is a French country so that is the language spoke there, it was a little bit hard to communicate, but as in most foreign countries, you find a way to work it out. We were hungry and even though the boat staff told us not to eat because we would have lunch on the boat, we couldn’t wait - especially after the sub-par breakfast that we didn’t eat we figured lunch would be hit or miss. I found a Patisserie, because when in France you have to get baked goods! I ordered Jeremy a ham sandwich (but he got egg) and a few croissants and pain du chocolat for myself. We found a small bench to sit on, but there were not many places to sit in the city. The city itself was very crowded and pretty dirty. No one was rude, but there were a lot of people and the sidewalks and streets are very skinny! After eating we wandered around to waste time and I bought a pair of shoes. Luckily everywhere we went took US dollars, though I’m pretty sure I got ripped off at the bakery by getting change in Euro.

After a few hours we were back on the boat and speeding towards our next destination. The captain slowed as we passed by a cave full of hundreds of bats, it was weird, but cool to see. One of the staff started throwing bread at the bats, luckily it only made them fly into the cave, not towards us! As soon as we got there – a little cove off the shore of Martinique – they uncovered the hot trays that they had put out while we were in the city to serve us lunch. It smelled pretty gross and looked worse so I passed on lunch, luckily I had a croissant left over and a banana that I had thrown in my bag that morning. Jeremy ate some of the food, but even he wasn’t brave enough to try everything, he said it was just OK. Then they let us go snorkeling or take a dinghy to the shore to lay on the beach. We decided to snorkel, Jeremy had never done it before. We got in the water and the equipment provided was decent, what you would expect. Unfortunately there was not much action below the surface and we hardly saw any fish or coral, but it was nice and relaxing and a good initiation for Jeremy.

After getting back on the boat we were headed back to St. Lucia and we were seated inside on the lower level this time. They were playing a lot of fun music, but it was very loud, still we got a few drinks and relaxed a little. We saw at least a dozen dolphins playing in the boat wake – it was really cool. The captain said they know the boat and they like to show off. About halfway back we noticed one older lady looking a little green and once others saw that it was a chain reaction. They have little plastic bags hanging all around on the inside just in case someone gets sick and they went through a lot of them! Luckily we were OK, but through the trip we discovered that the best seat on that boat would be on the lower level, in the front, and in the middle. The people sitting there didn’t get wet, had an awning over their heads and didn’t get sick because the front is the best place to be.

Once back in the marina we took a Sandals sanctioned taxi back to the resort and went back up to the room, we were so tired from being on the water all day that I think we just took a nap for awhile and decided to take advantage of the fact that our room category included room service! We ordered and the delivery was fast and the server was really nice – it is a great option if it is included with your room. I had a vegetable strudel and Jeremy has a garden salad and a hamburger – both were really good.

FRIDAY, is the day we had signed up for the Soufriere Adventure Cruise so it was another early morning, but this one allowed us time to stop at Bayside for the buffet breakfast first. The breakfast food was great, there were a lot of options and we both found more than enough to eat. I took some Banana’s along just in case again! We once again took a taxi to a Marina that was not too far away and we got on another catamaran but this one was nicer, more open and used it’s sail power more than the engine. We got seats inside but quickly regretted it – out in front near the nets is the place to be. We slathered on the sunscreen and found a spot up front to sit.

There was a Sandals Grande photo shop employee on board and he was taking pictures of everyone from our resort on the boat which was nice. It was a very relaxing boat ride, especially after the one we had the day before. It was calm and perfect weather. We sailed alongside the pirate ship that was used in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie (the first one) the whole way to the south side of the island

We arrived in the city of Soufriere with great views of the Piton mountains on the way in and we were taken to a convoy of taxis. The taxis took us through the town into the drive-in volcano which was basically a few sulfur springs. It wasn’t quite what I had expected the “drive-in volcano” to be, and if you’ve ever been to Yellowstone the sulfur springs greatly pale in comparison, but it was interesting and something different. We had a tour guide walk us around and explain various plants and facts about the volcano. After he was done he of course expected a tip, unfortunately we had not had to spend much money yet and we still only had large US bills so we couldn’t do anything for him.

We got back on the taxis and they took us to the Botanical Gardens and Diamond Waterfall where we met up with another tour guide who made no secret that she was expecting a tip at the end, and she really did deserve it, we just couldn’t do it! She explained all the different plant life and all the beautiful flowers. The waterfall was really cool and the Sandals photo guy was there to capture all of the couples in front of it, but almost everyone took their own picture as well. The taxis then took us tot a local restaurant that was set up in a buffet for our lunch. It was a much better selection than the Martinique boat and we had a few beers (not included in the lunch). Jeremy was finally able to break some bills at the restaurant when he bought the beer, but it was too late for our tour guides!

The taxis took us back to the boat and the boat took us back to the North side of the island where the resorts are. On the way we stopped at Anse Chastanet for some snorkeling which was much better than the day before, we saw quite a few fish and some good coral, but they were blowing the horn for us to come back in shortly after we had gotten out there which was disappointing.

Back at the resort a little earlier than the day before we headed for the pool. We were in the main pool and I was able to grab a float because a lot of people were heading up to get ready for dinner. We had a late(r) dinner at the Olde London Pub and were seated right away (as we were with nearly every restaurant we went to). We started with Cheese sticks, then potato leek soup and I had a Guinness pot pie that had steak in it and I ate some of the beef because it was good, Jeremy had a steak and he liked that too. The dessert tray wasn’t very appealing, but by that time we were ready to go, the service there was a little bit slower than it had been other places.

We walked next door to the billiards room and played a few games, I was getting pretty tipsy on wine and we heard some loud reggae music so we went to find out what was going on. We went into the Palladium Night Club and there was a band playing, however there were not that many people inside watching them. They were a decent band and the club was nice, there were a lot of seating options, there just were not that many people there. In fact, when the band stopped they had their Sandals award night where people who won different competitions on the beach during the week got some award and there was only one winner who attended! I felt a little bad for the staff, but they must be used to it. Then they were going to have some sort of talent show so we decided to get out of there and we went down to the beach for awhile and back to our room.

SATURDAY we could finally sleep in again, so we did! We went to Toscanini’s for breakfast and it was really good. We decided to do a little shopping and we took a taxi to the Rodney Bay Mall. Our TA had said we could just take the Sandals shuttle and get dropped off, but they wouldn’t let us do that. It was $10 each way in the taxi so it wasn’t too bad. Unfortunately I was hoping to find local crafts and things but the mall was more of a mall that we have here. I was able to buy some make-up (I forgot to pack mine) and we got some artwork and some hot sauce to take home then went back to the resort. I guess we should have gone to Castries for more local shopping, but we never made it there.

Back at the pool to cool off, we hung out at the swim up bar and I think I tried just about every drink they make with Blue Curacao! I got pretty tipsy (again) and we went back to the room to take a quick nap. Woke up and got ready for dinner, we decided we would try one of the other resorts. We had a book in our room that described the other restaurants so we picked Arizona in the Regency because Southwest sounded good.

The shuttle was right on time and it was about a 30 minute drive to the Regency La Toc with a stop at the Halcyon along the way. Once we got there we got a map and walked around a little, the pool there was bigger and looked very nice. We were seated right away at Arizona, but the service for the rest of the meal was terrible, very slow. We were there within an hour of the closing time but there were not very many other people there eating. The entertainment was great – this St Lucian guy singing like George Strait or something, he was really good. They love country music in St Lucia! Food was decent, but the service kind of ruined the meal. We had heard from others that the service at both other resorts was not as good as it is at the Grande because the Grande is a “Signature’ location so we believe that from our experience.

We walked around the resort – there were people being shuttle to their rooms because some of them are so far away and a lot of the room we did see looked more like motel rooms than resort rooms. The whole place just looked dated compared to the Grande and there were even a lot of rooms that didn’t have a balcony or even a water view! The Regency also seemed really close to the ocean and the ocean was a lot rougher in that area – the waves were pretty strong there whereas at the Grande it was always calm. We never saw the La Toc restaurant, which is the fine dining one that requires reservations well in advance, we never made a reservation and we were nervous they would have an issue with Jeremy’s bare toes, but we heard from others that it was really good.

I did finally see some hammocks which made me excited! We laid in one for awhile and then decided to go back to the Grande, unfortunately we missed the shuttle by like 2 minutes so we had an hour to kill. We found a sports bar to hang out it, but there was no one there. There was one bartender and one other couple in the whole bar so we were a little unsure, but didn’t know where else to go so we got some drinks. The bartender was not very friendly and even though there was no one else there it took him awhile to get to us. The only other couple in the bar was also waiting for the shuttle to the Grande. Which finally came and we were back home.

SUNDAY I slept in again. Jeremy was up early and went down to the Sunset (main) pool to reserve us some lounge chairs. You have to save your chair early on with a towel or else they are all gone by 11:00. He also pulled up a float, those are pretty hard to come by and I was always complaining about not having one so he laid one by the chair for me to use when we came back down. He also stopped by the Bayside restaurant and made us some breakfast plates and brought them back up to the room. We ate in our room and headed down to the pool. After a few hours we went into Josephine’s again for some lunch crepes – they were so good. I had chocolate, it was pretty rich, but so yummy.

The Beach Bar had a DJ every afternoon, he was slightly annoying but it is much better than the easy listening that is played around the resort the rest of the time. Unfortunately when we came back from lunch someone had stolen my float. People are kind of mean about the float situation, I don’t know why they just don’t have more of them. So I was mad but we still had a good time relaxing by the pool all day. We went back up to the room around 4 and took another nap :) Then we cleaned up and got on the shuttle to the Halcyon for dinner. There was a big group of people waiting for the 7:00 shuttle, but after the first one filled up there was another right behind it so they must plan for that.

We arrived at the Halcyon with a big group of other people from the Grande and luckily we were near the front of the bus because everyone was going to the same place – The Pier restaurant. We got there and had to put our name on a list, it was the only time we had to wait to be seated the entire week. We walked around the resort in the meantime, it was smaller but looked pretty nice. It wasn’t as updated as the Grande, but the rooms looked pretty big and they all had a cottage feel with a walk out porch. We did hear the pulsing bass of music and wondered where it was coming from, we walked towards it and got to the East edge of the resort without ever discovering what it was so we assume there was a nightclub nearby, unfortunately you could hear that through at least half of the resort so I’m not sure if that is an every night occurrence or not. We noticed that the Ocean was pretty rough on the beach here too.

We got seated at The Pier and service was good there. The food was good, I had vegetable lasagna that was decent and Jeremy really liked the Grey Snapper he ordered. After dinner there wasn’t much else to do there so we headed back to the Grande and hung out in our room on the balcony for the rest of the night.

MONDAY was our last full day so we really tired to enjoy it. We went to Bayside for breakfast because Josephine’s wasn’t open yet (yes, I’m obsessed with crepes) and threw towels on some chairs and grabbed a float on our way. After breakfast we went to change into swim suits and by the time we got back someone had stolen my float again. I was really pissed about the float situation, Jeremy didn’t really understand, but once it is gone, it is really hard to get another one unless it is really early or really late – everyone saves theirs and I didn’t have the guts to steal someone else’s while they were gone so it made me mad that someone would do it to me.

I got over it and we decided to walk over to the smaller Lover’s Pool, there was one other couple there but after they left we were the only ones in that pool for at least an hour. The pool was pretty small, but it was nice that it was secluded and private. And there were 2 floats there! So we laid around in the water for awhile and then it was time for lunch, so I dragged the float from the small pool back to our chairs and this time I put my towel and bag on top of it so no one would take it.

We went to the Bayside restaurant again for lunch and had the buffet, it was really good and there were a ton of options. I had a Panini sandwich made on the spot. Then we went to the water sports center and signed up to take out a Hobie Cat. I’ve been a boater all my life, but I have never sailed and neither has Jeremy so we were excited to try. We got a quick lesson from the staff and we were off! We had to stay in the bay that the resort was on, but that seemed huge in our little boat! We went all the way across to the Halcyon resort and back, there was a decent wind so we really moved across the water. We took turns driving and had a lot of fun.

After the sailing we hung out at the pool a little then went back to the room to clean up, we came down around 6:15 to have the Sandals photographer take our picture on the beach during sunset – they have them out there every night from 6 – 6:30. There was also a bunch of local vendors set up on the beach so we browsed a little. We went back to Toscanini’s for our last meal and it was great.

After dinner there was a show being put on on the pool deck – there were these dancers who were doing tricks with fire and they had a limbo show. There was also a steel drum band, they were great! I think this happens every Monday night since that is when most HMers arrive. The vendors were still on the beach so I bought some jewelry then we went back up to the room and hung out there for the night.

TUESDAY we had to pack up and leave – we had decided to take the helicopter transport back to the main airport from the smaller Vigies airport that was near our resort. Neither of us had ever been in a helicopter before and the two hour cab ride back to the airport wasn’t very appealing so it seemed like a fun idea. Unfortunately, it was raining that day, we had beautiful weather the entire week, but that day was just gray and dreary.

They took our luggage from our room to put on a taxi to the airport so we wouldn’t have to take it on the helicopter with us and we had breakfast. The weather wasn’t clearing so I kept checking back in with the tour desk but they said it was still on so we went to look at the professional pictures Sandals had taken throughout the week and we got a package of those, I also bought some more souvenirs from the gift shops and we finally were ready to go.

The helicopter pilot told us that the weather was supposed to be even worse on the south side of the island so he wasn’t sure how choppy the ride would be, that was a little unsettling! We were with one other couple, they sat in the back seat and Jeremy and I sat up from, I was right next to the pilot and all the controls! It was a great view, especially because of the weather – there was a lot of low hanging fog in the rain forest that looked cool

We made it to the airport OK and were taken to our luggage and then to check in. We had a slight issue with our connection in Atlanta, we had to get our luggage and re check it there because it was an international flight but the hot sauce I had purchased at the St Lucia duty free was still in my carry on and I didn’t think about it, but they stopped me at security and I had to go back, wait in a long line, find some sort of bag to put it in, check it and hope that it didn’t break open! That was a huge pain, so remember to put all liquids in checked luggage – even stuff you buy in the airport if you have to check again.

We were back home and felt like it was too short of a trip, of course, but we had a great time and we really loved the Sandals concept and plan to return in a few years to another resort, but we will probably try to stick with the ‘signature’ resorts from the differences in service levels that we observed.

Things we saw but didn’t do – lagoon pool, fitness center, tennis courts and spa all looked great. We also wished we would have walked over to the Pigeon Island park that was right next to our resort – but we never did. I brought bug spray because I had heard the insects are bad there, but we never even had to open it. I heard a few people that complained of bites, but we were totally fine. I would still bring it just in case though!

MY HM ADVICE
-Bring plenty of 30 spf or higher sunscreen (and use it every few hours, more often if you are swimming – sunburn ruins the trip!)
-Don’t worry about packing a beach towel, they are provided
-bring a beach tote bag
-make sure your DH brings closed toe shoes and button up collared shirts
-have small bills when you leave the resort property for tipping
-book excursions and restaurant reservations right away, they fill up fast
-you don’t need a power adapter, there is a US current plug. There is a hair dryer also.

Wedding Planning

PLANNING
After getting engaged and choosing a date nearly 1 ½ years out, I figured I would have time to attend to all the little details. I am kind of infamous with my friends for being the ‘planner’ for parties, get-togethers and trips so I knew that there would be some expectation and I was ready to meet it. I started off strong, booking the church and DYC the week after getting engaged. Then we began the hunt for a photographer because that was very important to me. After securing Dionne I felt really good about things.

Over the next year or so I was a pretty constant presence on the knot’s Detroit message board, I got tons of great ideas and feedback from all the great Detroit Knottie’s all the while checking different vendors off my list. My only speed bump was the florist (skip to the next paragraph if you don’t care about it) – I had called Nicole at Westborn to see if my date was available and it was, she had one wedding booked for the same day, but she takes 2 every day so it was open. We set up a meeting, but my mom really wanted to be involved with flowers and when I told her the date, she couldn’t make it. So we rescheduled and this time Nicole had something come up, I was going out of town for work for a few weeks so I didn’t set another date with Nicole right away because I wasn’t sure of my schedule. When I got back home and back on the knot I see that another June 9 knottie was posting in excitement about booking with Nicole, so that would make her limit of 2 weddings on my date. I was pretty disappointed and upset with the way Nicole handled things, nothing against the other knottie of course, how would she know? But Nicole knew that I was interested in that date and just because we had rescheduled some meetings so couldn’t even give me a courtesy call saying there was someone else interested so I’d better decide or something?

Anyway, after that I put off vendor decisions for a few months and put off finding a florist for probably too long, but it all worked out because in the end my florist was fantastic, but more about that later. . .in the fall, I was discussing an idea with my DOC (who is also my friend) I had seen on Brides.com – they showed a STD card that was a little wooden life preserver, since I was using a subtle nautical theme I thought they would be perfect as escort cards, but I couldn’t find anything similar online anywhere and the ones from the actual site were about $7 each so that didn’t make much sense. My coordinator says ‘you know, I’ve seen those as Christmas tree ornaments that are frames, in fact you could put your table information right in that frame and then hire a party photographer to take pictures on the spot to put in the frame!’ Of course I thought this to be a stroke of brilliance, and it was, I just didn’t realize how much of a pain it was bound to become. We went to Bronner’s and found the cutest ornaments that would work perfectly, they had about 500 in stock and since we had not yet finalized the guest list, I decided it would be easier to buy 100 and come back for the rest rather than buy too many and have to deal with returning the extras. Another big mistake.

As the day drew nearer and my ticker number got smaller I was getting really excited, I started making all kinds of to-do lists and I was checking off pretty much everything on them – I purchased the vases I needed for the DIY centerpieces I wanted to do, I purchased a photo frame card box from a fellow knottie, I ordered Jeremy’s wedding gift and bought all the BP presents. There were a few items that seemed to always get carried over to the new to-do list instead of getting checked off, but I figured it wasn’t a big deal I’d do them soon, I had plenty of time. We were close to the final guest list so now that I had a better idea of a number in my head we went back up to Bronner’s to get some more ornaments. They were nearly all gone. We had about ¼ of them break on us (turns out the quality was not quite what it seemed) and the store didn’t even have enough in stock to replace the broken ones, much less for us to purchase the 50 more that we needed. I didn’t freak out at first, I figured I would just contact the manufacturer and buy them directly. I got on the site, found my frames and couldn’t figure out how to get an order form to pop up . . . turns out they were not going to make any more of those particular ornaments until mid-July and they had none that they could send me. So I started to freak out, I contacted Christmas stores all over the country and found 16 in upstate NY but for $2 more per ornament and shipping charges and the fact that still wouldn’t be enough I knew I had to figure out something else. At this point, with about 6 months to go, I realized I wasn’t having much fun. Usually when I am planning events, I love it, but wedding planning was more of a chore than anything else to me now. I still cared, but now it was about having to do things rather than wanting to do them.

My BM dresses came in early and so did my dress – I figured after all the buzz on the knot that I would get my alterations done by Hana even though it was an hour drive one-way for me, but I had started to finally drop some of the weight I had gained a few years ago due to PCOS and a back problem that left me bed ridden, so I wanted to wait until the very last minute to begin alterations, I figured I would just call her when I was ready to start.

About 2 months before the big day we finally decided on a florist, even though I still had a bad taste in my mouth about it and I’ve never really cared much about flowers anyway I knew I had to have them. I was planning on doing tons of candles everywhere so the flowers wouldn’t really matter. Then I picked up our invitations from Tifany, after initial shock of them being printed wrong and actually seeing the details in print, I sent them out. When we booked with Tifany we said we would get back to her on designing and printing the rest of the stationary we would need, I looked back at her quote and for whatever reason I just could not get behind paying her costs for things that I thought I could easily do on my own for much less. It wasn’t that I didn’t have $$ in the budget for it, it was more of the principle of it – I work in advertising, I am creative, I can do it myself. Come to think of it, my being a control freak and a perfectionist probably played a lot into this as well.

So I added all the rest of the paper products to my to-do list: favor tags, place cards, event (menu) cards, maps, table numbers, programs – I could get them all done, I would just go into the office after hours and print them there, no big deal. I even went to a stationary store to get samples of the exact paper that Tifany had used on my invitations for all of this printing so everything would match.

I finally called Hana who seemed slightly shocked that my wedding was a month away and this was my first fitting, but she agreed to work with me. At our first appointment she was even more shocked to see me in my dress. To say it was too big is an understatement, you can’t really tell in the pictures, but it wouldn’t stay up even with clips. I could tell she was a little pissed because she realized it was going to take a lot to fix my dress, she blamed it on the dress shop, but I’m pretty sure it was mostly my fault and my shrinking size that was the culprit. Hana showed me her veils which reminded me that I had never really gone veil shopping so I added that to the list along with a garter and a different bustier because the one I tried on with my dress didn’t work. I also needed to decide on shoes, I had been looking casually but never found anything. I swore to Hana that I was going to buy flats so it wouldn’t matter that I wasn’t wearing any as she measured my hem line, but I knew I needed to have them by the next fitting.

We had finally solved the escort card issue – I saw these cute boat frames at BB&B that were small and came as 6 boats strung together, I figured we could just cut them apart and use however many we needed. I bought 6 of them and threw them onto the ever growing pile of wedding stuff in our office where they joined the rest of the favors, all the vases, and the still broken cardbox among other things. (I bought it slightly damaged, it was a quick fix, I jut hadn’t quite gotten around to it yet. . . or gotten around to figuring out what pictures I wanted to insert, but that would be easy, I can do that later)

My work was busy as usual so instead of spending time on WR things after work, or staying late to start some of the printing, I was tired and just wanted to relax so I started putting things off as I am known to do with chores. I would think of random things I had to do and add them to the list, but there wasn’t very much being checked off the list at this point.

With one month to go I began to realize I still had a lot left on my plate, I was even planning to DIY my guestbook so that it could be a version of a photo guestbook since we were going to have the photographers there and all. Oh, by the way, I found out that the professional party photographers cost about $1000 so I again decided that I could do it better and cheaper my own way, I would hire one of my sister’s friends to take the pictures, buy a photo printer, ink and paper and along with a circle hole punch that would make the photos fit right into the frames everything would work out fine for at least $500 less.

I began to feel a little stressed out, in fact I was having chest pains whenever I would think about something WR. Since I had recently had 2 PE (blood clot in my lungs), I went to the Dr and after a battery of tests they decided there was nothing physically wrong, so I was put on anti-anxiety meds. The chest pain went away . . . along with most of the stress . . . and therefore the sense of urgency.

I went back to the stationary store to buy more of the paper I would need but they didn’t have very much in stock and it would take them awhile to order it, I realized that no one but me would ever know that the paper on their table at the reception was exactly the same as what their invite had been printed on so I went to Jo-Ann’s to look at other options, I found a cardstock that was a champagne-y color, but it was 12 x 12, after a few days of thought, I realized that was perfect because I could cut it into sections and use the same sheet for a variety of needs, I bought out the Novi store and had about 20 sheets. I started measuring and found I could fit 2 menu cards on each page . . . so, with just over 200 people expected, I needed about, oh, 90 more. I bought out the Canton Store, the Westland store, the Brighton store and the Bloomfield Hills store and I was still short. I looked for other options, another color that was close. At this point I had too many pages of champagne to decide to do half and half so I would have to match it as closely as possible. I found a gold color that wasn’t bad, but the Novi store only had 2 sheets, the other stores didn’t have many either (after my 2nd round of trips around the western metro area) luckily the Novi store got about 20 more sheets in, so I felt good. I bought a scrapbook and a bunch of 12 x 12 pages that I planned to divide into squares so that guests could have a space to write their thoughts and we would glue in their picture later. I would have to let the photographer know. . . wait, who is going to be my photographer? I had delegated that to my sister and not thought about it much since then. After a call to her I realized we had no one. I think this is about the time that things started to go downhill fast. I didn’t have the printer yet either, but I had been to Best Buy and found one I wanted, I just needed to go buy it, that can wait until my days off before the wedding. I’ll have plenty of time to tie up loose ends then.

With about 2 weeks to go, I realized the mountain of stuff in our office was still there, so I began running all the vases through the dishwasher. That reminded me that I really needed the pillar candles to go in them. You would think pillar candles are available pretty much everywhere, right? Well, they are, but most stores offer scented and only one size. I needed 3 different sizes. After much searching, I found them at Michael’s, and they were on sale! Yay! I had Jeremy buy 20 of each size in white. So that was all set. But wait, the key to my centerpiece is the dock line. . . I had meant to measure that and get a bunch of them – add it to the list. I remembered to order our votive candles and votive holders – they came in mostly fine (3 broken out of 216)

I began designing the event cards, escort cards, and favor tags. I’d get to the programs after those were done. Oh yeah, I should really contact our pastor to find out what needs to go in the program.

I found shoes that would work for me, and my second fitting with Hana went well – she still needed to take in about an inch off my waist, but the dress was actually staying on me! Things were good again, I could relax a little, I was getting things done.

The last week or so is kind of a blur to me, so I’m not exactly sure how it went down, but these are the things I had to get done:
-printing of 100 of 210 double sided menu cards
-cutting of 100 of 210 event cards
-printing and cutting of 150 favor tags
-making one of those ‘cute’ shirts for my FG and MOH and myself (only the FGs got done, 5 minutes before we left for the rehearsal)

My BMs came over the Wednesday before the wedding and helped me with:
- filling of 100 bags with rice
- tying favor tags on all the frames
- cutting the escort cards to fit in the frames
- putting the escort cards in the frames (which by the way, we found out that about 20 of them were still defective and the backings wouldn’t come off, so we spent a good part of the night digging the backings out with a knife and then sanding them down so they could be re-inserted easily)
- cutting the boat favors apart and re tying the strings to make them individual favors (there wasn’t enough string to work for all 6 on the line so I made an 11 pm run to Meijer for more, while I was there I managed to pick up some dock line-ish rope)
- cutting the dock line into the correct lengths, we only got through one of those because then the line started to fray so badly that it looked terrible. . . need to figure out a solution

The Thursday before the wedding, we had appointments with several vendors for final payment, of course most of my vendors were on the east side and I wasn’t. We had to cancel the appointment with the DYC because the centerpieces were not ready (needed to figure out the rope fray) and the favors were not done (we ran out of frames of course and had a few misprints to fix) so we met with: Hana – the dress fit beautifully; Maya (she let us know that we would be using brand new chair covers!); dropped a CD off to Kelly; stopped by Harp’s to get my mom a good bra; got stuck in tons of traffic along the way. We ended up getting back so late that I was literally bawling in the car on the way home. I missed my tanning appointment and I had planned to accomplish so much more that day. I finally went back into the office to print the remaining event cards – I was there until 2 am. At least my dad had taken care of buying the printer and he said he would figure it out for me. My sister had appointed 2 friends to run the photo station. I had talked with our pastor and he had sent me the ceremony details, I still had to figure out that program design though.

On Friday, we had to meet with the DYC, I had figured out that putting masking tape at the ends of the rope would stop the fraying. Jeremy loaded up the car with the vases, the pillar candles, the menu cards, the favors, the votive holders and we were on our way. I was taping and cutting rope the whole way down there. We were 30 min late, but we made it. Loaded everything into the club and Julia left us to put together the centerpieces. Thank goodness we didn’t have to put the votive candles in the actual holders ourselves. . . wait a minute, where are the votive candles?! Jeremy didn’t know he was supposed to include them, they were in our basement. Shit. I called my mom and she said my dad was planning on coming down to the boat with my sister’s boyfriend (who was due in later that night from NYC) tomorrow morning to clean it up in case anyone wanted to see it and he would drop them off. Perfect! My sister (who had come in the night before and was with my mom) said she would let her BF know and not to worry about it. My dad however, still couldn’t quite figure out the photo printer, but he was confident that my sister or her friend would be able to so I shouldn’t worry about it.

We get home and it was much later than I had planned. . . I suddenly realize that we don’t have a unity candle (when I saw how much the wedding places were charging for a set, I again, based on principle, decided I could just wrap some ribbon around some candles and make my own. . . well I had the candles and the ribbon, but I had never done it) I ran up to Michael’s bought a unity candle set that I really didn’t like, but it was slim pickins, briefly considered buying a traditional guest book but instead bought a few more 12 x 12 pages and decided I would draw off the squares that night so my idea could still be pulled off. It was at this time when I saw a full tray of the exact same champagne colored card stock that I had searched all over for. I had assumed that Michaels and Jo-Ann’s had different suppliers and different brands of scrap booking stuff from each other. . . all that driving around for nothing!

I ran back home to change for our rehearsal, tied cards to all the gifts, loaded them into the car, grabbed the FG basket and RB pillow, made and brought the FG shirt (which she never wore because she came to the rehearsal in a dress – of course, that never crossed my mind, I was just ironing on the cute decal while crying in our basement and Jeremy was trying to help, but there was no helping me at that point)

Rehearsal

REHEARSAL
We started the rehearsal and the pastor kept telling my DOC that she couldn’t do half of the things that we had planned on. He went into this whole religion speech that was un necessary, he wouldn’t let us rehearse more than one time because it “wouldn’t help anyway” And this is our regular, attend church there pastor! I know this is just how he does stuff, but it was stressing me out. We decided to knowingly break several of his rules the next day (that ended up just confusing people more). Meanwhile, my sister gets a call from her boyfriend that his flight has just been canceled. Just canceled, that’s it, no reason, no reschedule, no solution. So she and he are frantically trying to find him another flight all night long.

We got to the RD and there were too many seats set up, my sisters BF and her friend that was picking him up were two of them, but there were like 6 empty chairs and they had us divided into 3 tables and I felt really far away from everyone. I sat next to Jeremy and my dad and I just tried to hold back tears the entire time. I didn’t talk very much or even pay attention to what was going on. I think everyone else was having a decent time. The food was good, but of course they got our pre-selected menu wrong, whatever though. Jeremy got up to make a quick speech and asked me to add to it, I couldn’t though. . . I had all my thoughts put together ahead of time, knew what I wanted to say, but I also knew that if I even attempted any of it I would start bawling uncontrollably so I passed and we just handed out gifts. My FG was SO excited to get bride Barbie and everyone else seemed happy with their gifts. We gave everyone a beach tote bag and there were a variety of items inside depending on their role. I realize that I had not yet finished Jeremy’s gift. He says ‘that is OK, we just won’t do gifts, I don’t really have anything for you either’ But I knew that if I didn’t give him what I bought him for the wedding, it would lose most of it’s meaning. I had bought him those photo locket cufflinks and I was going to insert pictures of his grandparents in them as they are all passed. That reminded me that I was going to have a locket with a picture of my passed grandmother as well . . . can’t wait to get out of this dinner, too much to do!

Jeremy figured out that we would need to have our luggage get to our suite the next night without us somehow so we worked it out that his parents would keep it in their hotel room and we could go get it when we checked in at the end of the night. So, I have to pack a bag still. And I have to pack up everything I will need for tomorrow because I’m supposed to go stay at my parents. My sister’s bf never got a new flight in, I guess there was some computer glitch that canceled a lot of flights. My cousin never made it in from DC either.

So after everyone finally made their way out of the restaurant, we ran home, packed for the next night, gave our bags to his parents, and I suddenly realize I don’t have any programs! I would have just not done them, but for 2 of my friends, their job was to hand them out. I had bought program paper at Michael’s earlier in the day and luckily one of my BMs said to me, “why don’t you just take it to Kinko’s?!” I have no idea why that had never even crossed my mind. I work with Kinko’s all the time for work and I know all the staff at the Novi store very well, I just had wanted to do everything myself so I hadn’t even thought of it! But, I did, I quickly set up the program text, emailed it to Kinko’s and ran over there. Thank God someone I knew was working and he said ‘don’t worry about it, we can even fold them for you’ I asked “how much will folding cost?” he said “with your discount. . . $10.80” ho-ly shit. I had been DIYing this to save money and it would only be ten effing dollars?! I was more mad at myself than anything else, I should have done everything at Kinko’s a long time ago! I should have done everything a long time ago regardless.

So the programs were off to print overnight and I realized that I had all the original pictures of my and Jeremy grandparents and parents weddings in my car, I asked to use their photo scanning machine, took them all down to great looking 4 x 6 prints, I was so relieved. At that point it was about 11:30 so I knew I just had to give up on my table numbers and get to bed. I went back home and on the way our first dance song came on the radio so of course I started crying (I swear I am not an emotional person usually!) I got home, packed as quickly as possible and went over to my parents house and got to bed.

Wedding Day

WEDDING DAY
The next morning, I got up, took a too long shower and when I got downstairs my dad asked me to take a look at the photo printer to see if I could “figure it out”. Now, I know my dad meant no harm and that he was helping me out, but I started to get pissed that this wasn’t taken care of before. . . to me, this is what happens when you delegate. (of course when you don’t delegate you end up crying every night) I tried for 2 seconds, couldn’t figure it out, but I was already late for my hair appointment that my mom and sister are also supposed to be at, but they are not ready to leave yet. I was walking out the door without them when my mom yells down the hall “What’s going on with the printer?” I lost it, I yelled something back, slammed the door and took off to the hair dresser. When I arrived, John, the owner and my stylist for the past 12 years, was waiting at the door for me and shouted out “Whose getting married today?” with his arms wide open, that was all it took for me to break down – I was crying and poor John was hugging me and trying to figure out what the hell could be wrong with me, my BMs were there and trying to help too, but nothing did.

John Paul started to work on my hair and make fun of me for being so worried about the little details (in a nice way though) and I realized I would just have to let things go now. So what if I don’t have table numbers and the table names are printed on the escort cards. But really I still couldn’t let it go. . . it isn’t going to make sense to anyone why they are sitting at the Upper Straits Lake table without the picture and explanation I had planned to print, but oh well I guess! I figured I will still have time before we have to get dressed to draw out the lines for the guestbook and I guess Jeremy will just get his wish of not doing gifts. . . although, I really wanted that locket of my grandma. Where the heck did I put those locket charms I was going to use? My sister said she would take care of it and made some calls. Then I realized that since my sister’s bf never came in, he wouldn’t be taking the votive candles to the DYC, better call dad quick. Dad is already on the boat. . . come on! So I called my DOC and she said “I’ll take care of it” she met me at the salon and took the candles. I found out later that she got trapped at the DYC because there was a kids event there and one of them got hurt and there was an ambulance blocking the bridge to get out until like 1:30 – I felt so bad!

We grabbed a quick bite to eat, but I was not hungry at all, I was so nervous and I am not a nervous person – I can give speeches in front of hundreds of people, convince my clients to see my point of view and all that but today I was practically shaking. We went over to the church and Dionne was already there with her assistant Sadie shooting the church exterior. We went inside to try and get organized, the girls were doing their make up and finally my mom and sister showed up and it was about time to start getting dressed. I was very quiet this whole time and still very nervous. I could tell Dionne was starting to get worried about time so I wrangled all the girls up and they helped me get dressed then they got dressed themselves. Suddenly, the florist arrives with all the bouquets – they were gorgeous! Like I said before, I don’t care al that much about flowers, I just knew that I wanted daisies because that is what my mother had for her wedding. Luckily I had a bouquet trial with my florist about a month before hand and I noticed that the peach color they chose was a bit strong, but the flowers on the day of were perfect! I added the photo of my grandmother to my bouquet stem with a pin and we went out into the church courtyard to take a bunch of pictures. Mike, the videographer showed up and then I heard that Jeremy and the guys were arriving. We had to hide for a few minutes and then they got hidden away so we got to take some more pictures. My dad arrived in his tux and he looked great! We did some pictures and then the guests started arriving. I could vaguely hear music and we all had to stay in the room where we got dressed. My DOC ran in to check on everything and a few of my aunts and cousins stopped by to say hi. I was trying not to think about everything, but I was still so nervous. . . and then I heard the organ start playing. I knew this was the beginning of everything I had been planning for the past 16 months, my stomach dropped and my hands started shaking a little bit, but for the first time I did not have my to-do list constantly running through my head, I just left it, it was too late to do anything else now.

We got organized to walk into the church and my DOC was trying to keep me and my dad hidden from view so we didn’t get to see much of the processional, but I heard that my FG and RB did a great job and all grandparents made it down OK. We were motioned to come to the entrance to the sanctuary and the doors were closed in front of us then all of the sudden I heard the first few notes of “here comes the bride” and the doors whooshed open and I saw this church, literally full to the back row of people all looking at me and smiling and I felt so strange, like I was watching someone else’s wedding, but it was mine! I looked down the aisle to see Jeremy with a huge smile on his face and as much as I wanted to just lock eyes on him I couldn’t help but look around me at everyone who was there for us. I felt like I was floating down the aisle. When we got to the end I realized I had to think about what to do next. My dad took care of the handing off and I took Jeremy’s had and realized that mine was still shaking.

The ceremony began and I kind of went on auto pilot, I was noticing the video camera and the photographer and I tried to look over at Jeremy but I also felt like I should probably stay very still for some reason. Then we had to turn and face each other and Jeremy smiled at me, when he did I saw his lip quivering a little bit and as soon as I saw that he was nervous too, it made me feel so much better. The rest of the ceremony was great, I’m sure my voice was shaking a little bit during the vows, but it seemed like all of the sudden we were kissing and being introduced and it was all over!

We went back into the dressing room to let the guests move out to the front of the church with their rice and we talked for a little bit, signed our license and then it was time for our fake exit.

We ran through the storm of rice, it didn’t hurt at all, it was weird though, and it left little white marks all over Jeremy’s tux. They were easily brushed off, but that was something I was not expecting. Then we all gathered together for a group shot outside the church of everyone who attended and it was back into the church for formal photos.

The formal photos went by pretty fast, which is great because we were tight on time, but I recall waiting around forever in past weddings that I had part in, I guess it is just because Dionne’s style is to not do that many posed pictures. I did have a chance to show my grandpa that I had included my grandmother in the wedding by way of the picture on my bouquet. He just smiled at me and said "Thank You". That was the one time all day (well since my make up had been done anyway) that I came the closest to crying. We got in the limo and I was feeling so much better, it was such a relief that things had started and we were married! I briefly remembered that I still had not done anything with the guestbook, but I didn’t care anymore. I just wouldn’t have one.

We stopped at the Scott Fountain on Belle Isle to take some pictures, we had a fun time. I’m pretty sure Dionne called us lame when we tried to do our ‘fun’ poses, but we didn’t care J After about 30 minutes there we went over to the southern shore line so we could get some pictures with the Detroit skyline in the background and then it was off to the Yacht Club. Of course that is easier said than done on a beautiful Saturday afternoon on Belle Isle! There was so much traffic, but we made it eventually and as soon as we got out of the limo I was bustled and we were taken upstairs to the third floor. Right away I went to my little spy lookout that I had used to observe every wedding that had taken place there over the past 1 ½ years while I was down there and I saw MY room – it was so beautiful. The candles were flickering, the linens and chair covers looked amazing, I was so happy with everything.

Kevin came up to instruct us on the entrance and all of the sudden the emergency lights came on and everything else turned off. There was some squawking on the walkie talkie of the DYC event manager and they said “looks like we have Déjà vu from last weekend” He said to us – “we have a power outage, but don’t worry, it shouldn’t affect you” At this point, I was feeling so relieved and have had several glasses of champagne so I thought ‘whatever’ and Kevin continued on. We all went downstairs and I saw that indeed we did still have power, at least I heard music and saw lights so I didn’t care. We were introduced and cut the cake right away then we went to our seats. After several ‘clinking’ kisses and 2 great speeches (my sister made my dad cry for the only time that day), my grandpa gave a blessing and the salads came out.

As soon as the salads were served, we took off with Dionne and our parents to get some more pictures. A friend of a friend of ours has the biggest boat at the club and they said they would be happy for us to take some pictures on it so we went out to that boat and got some dock pictures and then it was back in for dinner. The food was fantastic, I got compliments on it all night, and I actually ate my dinner. But as soon as dinner was over, it was back out to take more pictures, I really wanted big family group pictures so we did my dad’s side, my mom’s side and same with FIL and MIL and all of the sudden, it was 9:20 (we were scheduled for our first dance at 9!) so we ran in to do the dance and from that point on it was just so much fun! The power outage had affected a few of the sockets that Kevin was using so he wasn’t at 100% with the lights, but it wasn’t that big of a deal. I never got any of our cake which bums me out. Our dance floor was full the entire night, and the bartenders were a blast. Our Leben Hoch (Frankenmuth tradition) was a big hit and my only regret is that we hardly saw anyone I feel like! By the time we tried to go around to tables, a lot of the older people were already gone! Oh well I guess. I got “bride-jacked” by some partying boaters while trying to find Jeremy (who was off smoking cigars with the GM) and went to do a shot on their boat and I came back to talk to some more people. It was at this point that I realized how dark the other ballroom was – I guest the power outage had affected them, it was only candle light and no one was even in there. The other bride was pretty crazy I guess. I won’t say anything here, but PSA it probably isn’t a good idea to get wasted at your own wedding because among other things you might fall down and end up crying all night in the bathroom.

All of the sudden it was the last song! Actually I thought that we had Kevin until 12:30 and he stopped at midnight and the bar was supposed to only close for a half hour during diner and it closed for an hour so somehow the bar was open until 1:00 but everyone had to catch the 12:45 shuttle. We helped to pick up all the centerpieces and then we ran to catch the Omni shuttle, it was so overcrowded so a bunch of our friends hid in the back and we told the driver that they had gotten out so we could get in, it was a fun ride back. We checked in quick, got our luggage and were off to the bar with a decent size group of our friends. We spent about 90 minutes there then the stress of the day and the days before started catching up with us so we went back to the hotel and had a great night.

We went back to the DYC for a brunch the next day (that half of the people planning to attend didn’t make because of hang overs), opened our gifts and cards and packed up the cars. My sister was off to NYC, we counted our $$, deposited it the next day and then it was off to St. Lucia!
